About the event
Port is not just any fortified wine. It is a true masterpiece, exclusively crafted in the sun-drenched Douro Valley of Portugal. No other region in the world can claim the distinction of producing authentic Port. The vibrant shipping hub at the base of this valley is the city of Porto, a name synonymous with the wine itself. The first recorded mention of Port dates back to 1678, marking the beginning of its rise to fame in Britain.
During the prolonged Hundred Years' War between England and France in the 17th and 18th centuries, Britain turned to alternative wine sources. Enter Portugal. As shipments of Port embarked on lengthy sea voyages, merchants added extra brandy to preserve the wine, ensuring its quality during the long journey.
